Pensthorpe Nature Reserve & Gardens; North Norfolk, England
The Pensthorpe Nature Reserve covers 600 acres (240 ha) and with the River Wensum running through the site, it is largely an EU-designated Special Area of Conservation ( www.pensthorpe.com). As a result of its nationally-known conservation projects, the reserve has been the setting of the extremely popular BBC Springwatch TV programme from 2008 to 2010 ( www.bbc.co.uk/springwatch).
Pensthorpe has miles of nature trails to explore. These run through ancient fen meadows, woodland and a superb series of lakes. It also has a fine collection of birds, including endangered water birds from around the world. Dozens of migratory bird species can be seen during the winter and summer months.
Originally based on specifically-designed flooded gravel pits, Pensthorpe has been carefully restored as a haven for wildlife including the creation of islands for safe nesting areas, shallow scrapes for waders and other species, reedbeds and dragonfly-haunted dykes, crossing wild fen meadows.
