The creation of Squirrel Island is intended to provide red squirrels with a location where they can learn wild behaviour prior to release. The site is a remnant of ancient semi-natural woodland, isolated by former gravel working and already surrounded on three sides by open water.
Gravel excavated will be used to refurbish to Brown Trout spawning beds in the adjacent River Wensum SAC. It is of simular pH and grade to the original gravel beds, which have been covered by silt from agricultural and road runoff.
